Housing & Home Improvement Fair

Completing its 14th year, the Housing and Home Improvement Fair remains one of the most successful and well-attended community events in the South Minneapolis area. Free and open to the public, the Fair promotes city living, home improvement and maintenance, and community involvement.

The main exhibit hall, 2007.

The hallmark of the Housing and Home Improvement Fair is its vendor exhibits and educational workshops. Both are designed to help current and prospective homeowners in the process of improving, maintaining, enlarging, purchasing or refinancing a home.

The theme of the 2008 Housing Fair was Safe Homes / Safe Neighborhoods. The keynote seminar titled Home Security: Learn the 4 D’s - Deter, Deny, Delay & Detect was lead by SAFE Crime Prevention Specialist Karen Notsch from the Minneapolis Police Department.

Additional seminars were offered by industry professionals on topics such as Home Electrical Wiring System Basics, and How to Select a Remodeling Contractor. All seminars and workshops were free and typically lasted between 60 and 90 minutes. Registration was not required.

The House of Pressure or HOP was on display. This five foot, see-through model home helps show how a typical house can operate with respect to safety, comfort, durability and efficiency. Presented by the Minnesota Building Performance Association, the HOP allows attendees to view a range of diagnostic tests and building science solutions to common home energy issues

Todd and Jolene Trauba of Houle Insulation

This year, the Fair featured nearly 100 reputable contractors, real estate agents, lenders, retailers and community organizations exhibiting their services and wares. In addition, attendees had access to City building code and lead hazard experts along with representatives from energy, affordable housing, green homes and, of course, the neighborhood associations, to answer your questions.

The Fair is a family event. For the kids, a special workshop was offered at no charge where children get to build their own wooden project to take home and use. The 2008 Fair also distributed over $2,000 in door prizes.
